Old brick, done properly

Some of the GTA's best brick is on Etobicoke rooftops.

Etobicoke was built in eras you can read from the street: 1930s and 40s clay brick through the Kingsway, Sunnylea and Humber Valley, lakeshore bungalows in Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch, and postwar streets filling in everywhere between. Chimneys that old have usually been repointed once already, and the question is whether the last person used the right mortar. Hard modern mortar on soft old clay brick destroys the brick, and we see the results weekly.

We repair Etobicoke chimneys with mortar matched to the original in strength and colour, and brick sourced to blend with what's already there. Same crew and standard as our Toronto chimney repair service, and for everything else in brick and stone there's our Etobicoke masonry contractor page.

The part most contractors skip

A chimney repair you can't find afterwards.

On a 1990s house, brick matching is a catalogue lookup. On a 1938 Kingsway home it's a craft: the original clay brick has a colour range, a texture and a weathered face that new production brick doesn't ship with. We pull samples, source reclaimed or blended brick, and match the mortar joint profile the original mason used.

The difference shows from the curb. A patch in the wrong brick marks your roofline forever; a matched repair just looks like the chimney always did.

What eighty-year-old chimneys do when they're tired

Three patterns we see across Etobicoke's older streets.

01

Soft, powdery joints

Original lime-rich mortar eventually gives up its bind. If joints crumble under a fingertip, the chimney is holding together on habit.

02

Faces popped by bad repairs

Hard mortar from an old repair forces moisture out through the brick instead of the joint, and the brick face shears off. Fixable, but it needs the right mortar this time.

03

Step cracking near the roofline

Diagonal cracks following the joints mean the stack is moving. On a tall pre-war chimney, that's a call-us-this-week problem.

Etobicoke chimney questions, answered

Yes. Between reclaimed brick, blended new production and careful mortar tinting, we get matches that neighbours can't pick out. We bring samples to the house before ordering so you approve the match at your own wall, in daylight.
Almost certainly the mortar was too hard. Old clay brick needs mortar softer than itself so moisture escapes through the joint. Modern Portland-heavy mixes trap it in the brick, and freeze-thaw does the rest. We rake out the bad repair and repoint with a compatible mix.
Repointing an older chimney with matched mortar costs more than a quick modern patch, but far less than the rebuild the patch eventually causes. Full above-roofline rebuilds typically run $5,000 to $10,000. Quotes are free and itemized, with photos of what we found.
If the brick is sound, saving it is usually the better and cheaper path, and it keeps the house's original material. We only recommend rebuilding when brick is spalled through or the stack has shifted, and we'll show you the evidence either way.
