Flagstone fails at the base, never at the stone.

The stone itself is nearly indestructible. What fails is everything under it: shallow bases, poor compaction, no drainage. That's why so many Toronto walkways rock, heave and shed their joints within a few seasons of being laid.

We build flagstone walkways, front steps, patios and porch surfaces on properly excavated, compacted bases, set in mortar or polymeric sand depending on the application. Existing flagstone gets re-set, re-levelled and re-jointed rather than ripped out, when the stone is worth saving we save it. For vertical stone, see our stonework service.

Usually repairable. If the stone is sound, we lift it, rebuild the base, and re-lay the same stone with fresh joints, a fraction of replacement cost.
Mortared joints on concrete bases for steps and formal walkways; polymeric sand on flexible bases for patios. We'll recommend the right one for your surface, not the easier one.
