Historical masonry restoration in Toronto – Brick Aid Masonry
Heritage & Historical Restoration

Heritage masonry punishes modern shortcuts.

Toronto's Victorian and Edwardian homes were built with soft brick and lime mortar that breathe and flex together. Repair them with modern Portland cement and hard brick, and the wall starts eating itself: the new material wins every freeze-thaw cycle and the original brick pays for it. Half the heritage damage we restore was caused by a previous repair.

We restore heritage masonry the way it was built: matched reclaimed brick, lime-based mortars mixed to the original strength, joint profiles tooled to the period, and arches, headers and corbelling rebuilt to drawings rather than approximated. The same craft extends to our church and institutional restoration work, and pairs with heritage repointing and stone restoration on mixed facades.

Heritage restoration questions, answered

Yes. We've restored designated and listed properties across Toronto and understand the approval requirements that come with them. We'll work within your designation, not around it.
Old brick is softer than modern brick. Lime mortar flexes and sacrifices itself to protect it; modern cement mortar is harder than the brick and grinds it down at every joint. Using the right mortar is the difference between restoration and slow demolition.
That's the craft. We source reclaimed brick from the same era and region, and blend new units only where they'll never read as new. You'll see samples against your wall before we start.
More per brick, less per decade. Correct materials cost more up front but stop the failure cycle that cheap patches restart every few years. Every project gets a free written scope so you can judge it honestly.
