Measure before comparing colour
A convincing replacement starts with length, height, depth, texture, edge shape, and manufacturing character. A close colour match can still look wrong when the unit size changes the joint pattern. Measure several sound bricks because historic units often vary.
Compare in the wall’s real light
Brick colour changes with moisture, sun, dirt, and viewing distance. Compare dry samples against cleaned but unaltered surrounding masonry. Place samples in more than one location before approving a larger repair.
Record what the sample does not prove
Colour approval answers appearance only. Ask the supplier and project specifier to document the available technical data for candidate units, then record what has and has not been established. Select the repair mortar separately for the retained and replacement masonry.
